Ratings practice
Try separate 1–10 ratings and short handicaps with practice players. This is a local experiment, not official league scoring. No Google sign-in or database is needed. It does not sync between devices or guarantee a midnight finish.

Try a handicap matchup
These calculator controls do not change anyone’s rating.
8-ball: 3 / 3 · At most 5 racks.
9-ball: 30 / 30 points · Maximum target 30; no guaranteed rack limit.
Model’s 8-ball match win estimate for player 1: 50.0%. Within the pilot’s 40–60% fairness band. These estimates need real-world calibration.
How this provisional formula works
Each three-level gap doubles the assumed odds of winning a rack or earning a point. This is an uncalibrated house assumption, not APA’s formula. Ratings use performance across the whole match, rather than awarding a bonus for winning a handicapped match.
8-ball averages each rack’s actual-minus-expected result. Legal racks get a weight of 1 + 0.25 × balls remaining ÷ 7; foul losses get weight 1 with no remaining-ball value. 9-ball uses the player’s share of scored points. Multiply by 0.6, cap the adjustment at ±0.5, and keep each rating within 1–10. Displayed levels round the underlying rating.
Corrections require a reason and retain the original result. Ratings replay in original completion order, including later matches. Existing handicaps stay frozen. Browser history is editable by its owner; production permissions and durable audit enforcement are future work.
